International Travel: A Good Reason to Have Two Google Accounts Amy Cavender We've heard quite a lot over the last few months about travelers being asked to unlock their mobile phones —and, in some cases, provide their social media passwords —when entering the United States. We've also heard tips on traveling abroad with a phone; over at The Verge , the suggestion is to delete our data before leaving the country if we really want to protect it. 1 We can then install and sign into our accounts when we get where we're going, and repeat the process before returning to the U.S. Even that's dicey, though. If we know the passwords for our accounts, we can be pressured to give them up. If we use a password manager and its master password is the only one we know, we can be asked to give that up. We're in better shape if we use two-factor authentication—but then we're

Thinking Digital with External Review Materials Anastasia Salter For many, the academic tenure process begins over the summer. Even if your institution's internal review process and material submissions seem to be lurking months away in August or September, the process of preparing for and submitting materials for external review is likely already underway or on the summer to-do list. Just picking a list of external reviewers can be a challenge: Nels wrote a great post a few years ago discussing the process of selecting appropriate reviewers , and Karen Kelsky has a great advice post on external tenure letters (as well as a post addressing what to do in the event of a negative review .) But the challenges don't end after letter writers are chosen and agree to the review: depending on your institution, you may receive extensive guidance on the exact format of materials to send to t

Preview: Books I'll Be Reading This Summer Maha Bali There are three (open access) books I've been meaning to read and review, but I realized if I waited until I finished them, it would take a while, so I thought it would be good to post a "preview" here, of why I hope to dip into these books over summer. Education and Technology: Critical Approaches This CC-licensed e-book is edited by Giselle Martins dos Santos Ferreira, Luiz Alexandre da Silva Rosado and Jaciara de Sa Carvalho. The book "brings together texts which question the hypothetical neutrality of technology and are not based upon reductionist or universalised views of a world that is, indeed, marked by difference, complexity and inequality" (p. 11). Apart from admiring the ethos of the book, I also admire the editors' effort in making it fully bilingual – all articles are available in both En

Why and How to Make Your PDFs Searchable Amy Cavender As I noted last week, PDF is my preferred file format for document sharing, for a number of reasons. Not all PDFs are created equally, though. I've found that it's really important for files to be run through OCR (Optical Character Recognition). Why? There are two main reasons, in my experience: Searchability . Kathleen wrote about this several years ago, in " OCR Those PDFs. " Increasingly, I find myself working with journal articles and other documents in digital format, and I need to be able to search those files. The ability to search also, as Kathleen notes, makes it far easier to annotate PDFs on a tablet or computer. Accessiblity . If I'm sharing PDFs with other colleagues or students, I want them to be able to use them — and not everyone will be able to use a PDF that's just an image file. S

Open Thread Wednesday: Online Class and Virtual Attendance Challenges Anastasia Salter Like many of you, I'm in a moment of rapid transition, with spring semester grades barely posted and summer classes already underway. For students who are motivated by their graduation pace, funding, or other needs, summer classes are a great way to move forward: when I was an undergraduate I regularly embraced the format. As a faculty member I have more mixed feelings, particularly with the rising popularity of online summer classes. This summer I'm revisiting a difficult format that I've only taught once before: the online-only, six-week accelerated version of a course typically taught over a sixteen week semester. I addressed the challenges of converting a course to this format in a post last summer — essentially, lots of difficult decisions have to be made as to what content to leave i

How to Make a Time Map for the Summer Natalie Houston At the start of summer, many academics find themselves on a different schedule than during the academic year. Maybe you don't teach during the summer, or if you do teach, the schedule is probably quite different from your spring/fall semesters. Some service obligations continue during the summer, but others recede into the background for a couple months. At the start of summer, it's easy to feel that you've got all the time in the world. The weeks stretch ahead, full of promise. But even only two or three weeks later, it's just as easy to feel like that time is slipping by and you're not making the most of it. At key transition times like this, I often sit down to make a time map, which I first learned about from Julie Morganstern's excellent book Time Management From the Inside Out . A time map is a template
